Participation in the improvement, enhancement and personalization of one’s home was the catalyst for HAA’s submittal. The FITZ-IT-KIT, a four-foot-by-eight-foot re-purposable container filled with materials, tools, instructions and contacts, provides a range of opportunities for homeowners to make improvements of their house facades, porches, and lawns. Depending on need, interest and priorities, it allows for small, medium and large interventions that might include new siding, house lighting, lawn improvements and rainwater collection. Beyond the immediate need of home improvement, the tool kit endeavors to:
• Emphasize the value of home ownership;
• Equip residents to invest in the community;
• Acknowledge the beauty in shared conditions as well as variation and serendipity along a street;
• Upcycle latent building material stock from Detroit’s deconstructed buildings; and
• Utilize composite materials and digital fabrication.
In addition to providing physical supplies, it provides financial access to professional assistance and leverages partnerships with local organizations. It aspires to reinforce a collaborative community where work is shared, skills are learned and relationships are built.
